New Sylvania water contract will cut bills

9/16/2008

Sylvania City Council last night unanimously approved a water contract with the city of Toledo that will trim monthly water bills by about $1.50 per customer.

The agreement will lessen the surcharge Sylvania pays for water from 100 percent to 75 percent.

In return, Sylvania has agreed to turn over 40 percent of its income tax revenues for new jobs at the Flower Hospital campus.

Sylvania had been purchasing water from Toledo without a contract since 1995. But Toledo recently passed legislation that would increase the surcharge to 125 percent for customers who buy water without a contract.

The deal will save Sylvania about $240,000 annually over last year s rate, or $480,000 annually over the new rate, Mayor Craig Stough said.
