DETROIT - A 21-foot Polaris jet boat that authorities say was traveling fast on the St. Clair River collided with a dock, killing three Michigan residents and seriously injuring a fourth.

The crash occurred about 9:40 p.m. Friday on the river's North Channel, about 30 miles northeast of Detroit, St. Clair County sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies identified the dead as Brian Karasinski, 50, Scott Gearhart, 50, and his wife, Barbara Gearhart, 47, all of Fair Haven.

Mr. Karasinski's wife, Lorraine, 51, was flown by helicopter to an Ann Arbor hospital for surgery. She was in serious condition yesterday.

Authorities don't know how fast the boat was traveling, said Lt. William J. Krul, commander of the sheriff's marine patrol division.

The lieutenant said open and closed containers of alcohol were found on board the craft.
