Black History Month celebrations on school calendar for February

Throughout the month of February, Owens Community College will celebrate the history, culture, and heritage of black Americans.

The Owens events marking Black History Month include the following events scheduled on the Owens Toledo-area campus on Oregon Road in Perrysburg

Feb. 17

Witnessing History: A Day at the Inauguration, a panel discussion moderated by Owens Presidential Fellow Cleveland Henderson, Jr.; 12 p.m., Audio-Visual Classroom Center rooms 125-128.

Feb. 19

Master Class with Artist Willis Bing Davis, including an interactive African-inspired jewelry demonstration for attendees; 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Learning Center at The Source, 1301 Monroe St. near downtown Toledo, and 1-3 p.m. at Center for Fine and Performing Arts Mainstage Theatre.

Feb. 22

African-American Small Business Awards Celebration presented by Owens Black Student Union, 5 p.m., Audio-Visual Classroom Center rooms 125-128.

Feb. 23

Beverly McIver: Paintings Art Exhibit; time varies; Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery where admission is free and which is open to the public 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays; 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturdays.

Feb. 24

Toledo Treasures, a brown bag lunch event featuring a talk by Owens Presidential Fellow Cleveland Henderson, Jr., on some of the Greater Toledo area s celebrated African American individuals and organizations; 12 p.m., Audio-Visual Classroom Center rooms 125-128.

Feb. 26

Army Diversity Portrait of America, an event featuring interactive exhibits such as the one on the U.S. Army robotics technology; 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.; Center for Fine and Performing Arts Rotunda and Mainstage Theatre.

Artist Beverly McIver Soul Food Luncheon and Lecture, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., College Hall Terrace View Cafe.

An Evening with Artist Beverly McIver, 7 p.m., Center for Fine and Performing Arts room 111.

Additionally, Owens libraries on the Toledo-area and Findlay-area campuses will display selections of books and audio-visual information on African-American heritage.
