Campus notes: Maumee High grad wraps up college tennis career
5/20/2009Maumee High School graduate Tim Kurtz recently wrapped up his tennis career at Defiance College.
Kurtz posted a 21-21 overall record as a senior at Defiance. He went 8-12 in singles action and was 13-9 in doubles competition.
Kurtz, who was a four-year starter, was 6-7 in conference play.
TENNIS: Kyle Doyle from Anthony Wayne High School posted a second straight 18-win season in singles play for Augustana College.
Doyle, a sophomore from Maumee, posted an 18-15 overall record for Augustana.
Doyle played the majority of his matches at the No. 4 singles spot. His 18 wins in singles matches in a season ties him for seventh on the school s all-time list.
Doyle also continued to be a valuable contributor in doubles. He finished with a 21-12 mark.
SOFTBALL: Anthony Wayne High School graduate Sam Kolling hit 0.327 in 32 games for Albion College this spring.
Kolling, a freshman from Monclova, slugged a team-high nine doubles and drove in 16 runs.
Albion College posted a 14-22 record.
Monroe High School graduate Mike Dushane and Emmanuel Christian graduate Casey Kahsen both earned all-conference honors while playing for the Defiance College baseball team this spring.
Dushane, a native of Monroe, was an honorable mention All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference player.
Kahsen of Temperance also earned honorable mention in the HCAC.
Dushane, a freshman outfielder, started all 38 games for Defiance and ranked among the top three on the team in at bats (157), hits (43), and runs (25). The leadoff hitter also had 19 runs batted in, eight doubles, and eight steals. Dushane finished with a .274 batting average while splitting time in center and left field. He also posted 14 multihit games
Kahsen, a junior, started 33 games behind the plate and was one of the top defensive catchers in the league. He led the HCAC in throwing out runners. He cut down 37 percent of runners attempting to steal.
Kahsen also had two hitting streaks of seven games and set career highs in every offensive category. He batted 0.269 with eight extra-base hits and 18 runs batted in. Kahsen ranked third on the team with a 0.385 slugging percentage and was fifth with a 0.366 on-base percentage.
The All-HCAC selections are voted on by the league s coaches.
TRACK AND FIELD: Gibsonburg High School graduate Rebekah Paul, a senior at Baldwin-Wallace College, wrapped up her collegiate career by earning all-conference honors.
Paul was named All-Ohio Athletic Conference honorable mention. Paul placed third in the 400 meter dash at the OAC championships.
She also was a member of the third-place 400 relay team at the league meet.
During the indoor season, Paul earned All-OAC honors with a second-place finish in the 400.
Paul finished her career with eight varsity letters and was a member of two school-record holding relay teams.
Paul, who has a 3.29 grade-point average, earned Academic All-OAC honors in each of her final three seasons.
She also was named B-W s most outstanding sprinter as a sophomore.
