Campus Notes: Elmwood grad qualifies for tourney
7/1/2009Elmwood High School graduate Curtis Smithey, a freshman at the University of Findlay, qualified for the U.S.A. Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Smithey competed in the 400-meter dash. He qualified for the national championships with a school-record time of 47.18, which ranks him 10th nationally. He also was a member of the Oilers All-American 1600 meter relay team.
The junior championships were held in Eugene, Ore. on June 25-28. It featured the best track and field athletes ages 19 and under in the United States.
SOFTBALL: Whitmer graduate Amanda Temple, a freshman at Owens Community College, was named a junior college All-American this spring.
Temple, an infielder, was named to a National Junior College Athletic Association Division II first team.
Temple set a school record with 54 runs batted in, which also ranked 34th in the country. Temple also led the team in hits (55), doubles (13), triples (8), batting average (.509) and on base percentage (.567).
Temple, the Express MVP, also earned a spot on the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference All-Conference and All-Region first teams.Owens posted a 27-13 overall record and captured its seventh OCCAC (8-0 record) title.
TRACK AND FIELD: Cardinal Stritch graduate Kristen Ameling recently wrapped up her collegiate career at Tiffin University.
Ameling qualified for the NCAA Division II national championships in the shot put. She finished ninth with a throw of 45-2 and set a new school record.
Ameling also was named Tiffin s Scholar Athlete of the Year with a 3.97 grade point average.
Ameling won the shot put at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships as well as the Oberlin and Tiffin invitationals. Ameling capped her senior season off with the GLIAC Commissioner s Award.
VOLLEYBALL: The Owens Community College volleyball program is holding a camp for girls in grades 4 through 12 in midJuly.
The three-day Express Volleyball Camp will be held July 13-15.
The camp will offer two separate sessions daily from 9-11:30 a.m. for grades 4-7 and from 12:30-4 p.m. for grades 8-12. The camp will be held in the College s Student Health and Activities Center in Perrysburg Township. Camp instructors will include the Express coaching staff, area coaches, and current and former collegiate players.
Each participant will receive individual instruction based on his or her positions. The fee is $80 a player, which includes a camp T-shirt. Call 567-661-7939.
