More than 40 youngsters from southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio are among the 16,000 students across the country who have been named semifinalists for National Merit Scholarships.
Semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of high school juniors nationwide, according to Eileen Artemakis, a spokesman for the scholarship program.
To qualify, high school juniors must excel on the Preliminary SAT, have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed by their high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm their earlier test performance.
To become a finalist, semifinalists must write an essay and submit a scholarship application in cooperation with a high school official.
Next spring, 8,200 students will be named National Merit Scholars and qualify for scholarships from a pool of about $36 million. The scholarship program will award 2,500 of these students college scholarships of $2,500 each.
