12 regional students receive National Merit scholarships

Twelve area students have been awarded college-sponsored National Merit scholarships that will provide them with $500 to $2,000 annually.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp., based in Evanston, Ill., said the winners from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan were among 2,800 nationwide.

The area students receiving the college-sponsored National Merit scholarships are:

•Jessica Braddock and Emily Rivest, both of Findlay High School

•Jared Dryden of Findlay, who was homeschooled

•Kari Katterheinrich of Wapakoneta High School

•Nichole Cousino of Maumee High School

•Patrick Dungar of St. John's Jesuit High School

•Andrew Garner of Oak Harbor High School

•James Lauback of Perrysburg High School

•Nathan Miklovic of Sylvania Northview High School

•Kyle Forrester of Sylvania Southview High School

•James Zimmerman of Ottawa Hills High School

•Anna Woods of Hillsdale Academy in Hillsdale, Mich.

Sponsor colleges and universities include 120 private and 80 public institutions throughout the country.

This scholarship competition began in October, 2008, when more than 1.5 million high school juniors took the preliminary qualifying test.

By the end of this year's competition, the commission will have awarded $36 million to 8,400 National Merit scholars.
