Oak Harbor wrestling grad to represent U.S.

Oak Harbor native JD Bergman captured the 211.5-pound freestyle wrestling championship at the U.S. World Team Trials last night in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Bergman will now represent the United States at the World Championships held in Moscow in September.

In the finals, Bergman swept a best-of-three series against former Iowa State two-time NCAA champion Jake Varner, winning 3-1, 3-2, and 2-1, 1-1. Bergman, who competes for the Ohio Regional Training Center, defeated Varner in the national finals in April.

Bergman, 25, was a two-time state champion at Oak Harbor and a three-time All American at Ohio State.
