St. John's narrowly misses state golf tourney

FINDLAY — The St. John's Jesuit golf team missed qualifying for the state tournament by one stroke Wednesday.

The Titans shot 315 at the Division I district golf tournament at Red Hawk Run Golf Course. But Ashland won the event with a 298, and Avon Lake was second with a 314. The top two teams qualify for the state meet next weekend.

Senior Michael Balcar shot a 75 to earn a spot in the state tournament.

St.Francis de Sales junior Ben Torchia also earned a berth by carding a 72.

Torchia won the City League title last month, and Balcar was second.

Keith Brooks of Ashland won medalist honors. He tied his brother, Josh Brooks, as both shot 71. Keith Brooks then won in a playoff.
