Suspect charged in shooting death of Sandusky police officer
3/20/2011SANDUSKY - The man accused in the Saturday morning shooting death of Sandusky Police Officer Andrew Dunn was charged Sunday with aggravated murder.
Kevin Randleman, 50, of Sandusky, is under guard at the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio, said Erie County Sheriff's Capt. Paul Sigsworth. Randleman was alert and conscious when a detective served him with the formal charge, the captain.
Officer Dunn stopped Randleman, who was on a bicycle, about 3 a.m. Saturday on Tyler Street, between Hayes Avenue and Prospect Street, according to investigators. As an assisting officer arrived, Officer Dunn and Randleman exchanged gunfire.
Officer Dunn suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:33 a.m. He was wearing a bullet-proof vest when he was shot.
Randleman, who lives at 909 West Adams St., suffered at least one gunshot wound, according to the sheriff's office.
Captain Sigsworth could not comment on why Officer Dunn stopped Randleman, saying the incident was still under investigation. He also could not comment on who fired first.
Once Randleman is medically cleared, he will be immediately transferred to the Erie County Jail, the captain said.
