Toledo man charged with assault on UT campus

A Toledo man is being held in the Lucas County jail after allegedly assaulting another man on the University of Toledo's campus.

Charged with felonious assault, failure to comply, obstructing official business, and resisting arrest is Domenic Hudson, 18, of 1909 Christie.

According to court documents, the suspect allegedly punched and kicked Cody Halka, whose age was not available, on the face and rest of his body.

Mr. Halka reportedly suffered a left orbital fracture, broken nose, and cuts on his hands and feet, according to court records.

It's not clear if either man is a UT student.

The assault was reported to police today at about 2:30 a.m. near McComas Village.

The suspect was arrested shortly after the assault, but not before taking university police on a brief chase.

An officer reported spotting a speeding vehicle on Stadium Drive without headlights on. The officer attempted to stop the driver, who continued running stop signs and red lights around campus. The driver stopped at 2465 Douglas Rd., according to court documents.

Once stopped, officers said that the suspect refused to put his hands behind his back. It took three officers to get the suspect into handcuffs, according to court documents.

After the attack was reported, campus police immediately surrounded the McComas site, issued a dangerous situation alert via text message, and sorted out witnesses and combatants, according to UT police Chief Jeff Newton.

The chief said two groups of partygoers had attended a gathering off campus, and after it broke found themselves face to face on campus. Words were exchanged, and the victim and assailant started fighting.

UT officials also activated an audible alarm when the incident was reported to police. The alarm consists of a siren followed by an audible message heard campus-wide to avoid the McComas Village area, Chief Newton said. With the situation under control, the audible alarm was sounded again, and an all-clear message was broadcast. Police also put out information about the incident on the department's Facebook page, Chief Newton said.
