"Paper was expensive," Aralina Ferrella, 90, joked about the reason she and her family members began creating art with nontraditional objects, including the, "Lint Men" she creates out of dryer lint, at left. Ms. Ferrella said she's been creating most all of her life in one way or another. As a young woman she loved to sketch and created a book of images from strings and other materials. While her husband Jim was serving in World War II she built B-24's planes in Ypsilanti, Mich. These days, she continues to create and has, for the past three years, been making lint men. Since she stopped keeping a studio in downtown Toledo, she and Jim keep most of her art in their West Toledo home. "That's why it's all junked up here," she joked.
