Civil rights champion Martin Luther King, Jr., is being recognized today during ceremonies locally and across the nation. Many of those ceremonies will include quoting from some of his public appearances. Four years after his ‘I have a dream’ speech in Washington, the Rev. King was still striving for racial equality. On Sept. 22, 1967, Blade photographer Don Strayer captured an impassioned Rev. King as he spoke to a crowd of 3,500 people during a rally at Scott High School Fieldhouse. He told the rally that de facto segregation still existed and that a “radical reordering of priorities” was needed, starting with getting out of Vietnam. He stressed the need for civil rights legislation and pointed out that nonviolence was the most potent weapon the black man had to attain justice.
