Anthony McCarty scrapes the styrofoam to create the ball shape. The dark, connecting lies were created by the glue which he used to put the squares together to make the initial, square form; the light intersecting lines inside the dark ones indicate a high point for the circle. McCarty is using a large piece of cardboard as a guide.
