A former city of Toledo employee who was charged last year with solicitation after he allegedly asked an undercover vice-narcotics officer for a sexual favor in exchange for money and marijuana was arrested Thursday for allegedly having sex with a 13-year-old North Toledo girl.

Paul Malak, 40, of 3010 Hartman St., was charged with one count of illegal sexual conduct with a minor, which is a felony, police said. He was being held in the Lucas County jail last night in lieu of a $50,000 bond, a jail spokesman said.

Mr. Malak, hired by the city in 1989, resigned yesterday from his job as a construction inspector in the public utilities department.

A signed resignation letter was found under his supervisor's door, Bob Williams, assistant chief operating officer for Toledo, said.

Mr. Malak was suspended after the incident last year, Mr. Williams said. Detective Paul Tetuan said that in the recent alleged incident, the girl met Mr. Malak through a friend.

He told her she could visit him anytime and when she ran away from home Oct. 27, she met up with him, he said. He bought her clothes and jewelry and allegedly gave her money in exchange for sexual favors, police said.
