Local agencies get $3 million to aid homeless people

Six local nonprofit organizations will receive more than $3 million in federal grants for programs to help homeless people find someplace to live and become self-sufficient.

The grants are among $1 billion in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grants announced by President Clinton Saturday during his weekly radio address.

The grants will go to 2,633 projects in more than 350 communities nationwide to help homeless individuals and families move from temporary to permanent housing, get treatment for substance abuse, and gain access to health care, job training, and child care. Area organizations receiving grants are:

Neighborhood Properties, Inc., which finds housing for the mentally ill, $987,793.

Family Outreach Community United Services, which operates a residential facility for homeless women and children, $960,113.

Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo, $384,325.

Aurora Project, which has a transitional housing program for women and children in Toledo, $310,998.

David's House of Compassion, an HIV/AIDS service organization, $217,431.

Neighborhood Health Association, Inc., $158,709.
