VOLNEY, N.Y. - Toledo's Owens-Illinois, Inc. will close a beer-bottle plant here by the end of April, spokesman John Hoff said.

Production will be shifted to other O-I plants. The plant closing, the third announced by the Fortune 500 company in the last six months, is part of a cost-cutting program begun last October and will affect 200 employees. The other plants were in Brockway, Pa., and Lakeland, Fla.

The company is restructuring glass container operations, which have been hurt by the switch to plastic containers and productivity improvements that have allowed for the production of more bottles in fewer plants.
