2 teenagers sentenced for carjacking in Toledo

4/7/2001

Two teenagers involved in a carjacking spree in March were sentenced yesterday to serve at least one year in an Ohio Department of Youth Services facility.

Both were caught after they led Toledo police on a 23-minute chase March 7 that ended in Swanton. The youths were riding in a car they stole two days earlier from the 2600 block of Alisdale Drive.

A 16-year-old Holland boy admitted to robbery and failure to comply with a police order and was found delinquent by Magistrate Laura Restivo. A 16-year-old Toledo boy admitted to and was found delinquent in connection with aggravated robbery and robbery. He was found delinquent in connection with a separate carjacking on March 6 in the 300 block of Torrington Drive.

Another teenager involved in the chase will have a sentencing hearing in two weeks. A fourth teenager, who was not involved in the chase but is accused in connection with the Torrington carjacking, is scheduled for trial at the end of the month, authorities said.

All of the hearings have been or will be in Lucas County Juvenile Court. All of the teenagers are held in the Child Study Institute.

The other youth involved in the chase, a 15-year-old Toledo boy, admitted to delinquency in connection with aggravated robbery in connection with the Torrington carjacking. He is scheduled to be sentenced April 17.

Another teenager in court yesterday, a 17-year-old Toledo boy, entered a denial, the equivalent of a not guilty plea, to the charge of delinquency in connection with aggravated robbery, authorities said. He was charged in connection with the Torrington carjacking. He faces an April 27 trial.

Darryl F. Reed, 18, of Toledo, is charged with two counts of robbery for his involvement in the March 7 chase and the carjackings. He is scheduled to appear in Lucas County Common Pleas Court at the end of the month.

Chief juvenile prosecutor Denise Cubbon said the youths remain under investigation for carjackings in Wood and Monroe counties.
