Man who shot at suspected burglar arraigned in court

4/27/2001

An East Toledo man accused of shooting at a car occupied by two people, one of whom the man thought tried to burglarize his garage, was arraigned yesterday in Toledo Municipal Court.

David Shelton, 35, of 1732 Homestead St., was charged with two counts of felonious assault. He was released from the Lucas County jail after posting 10 percent of a $20,000 bond ordered by Judge Francis X. Gorman.

The incident began Tuesday after Mr. Shelton reported to police that rifles and tools were stolen from his garage. He decided to set up baby monitors to listen for the burglars, who he thought would return to steal a generator.

Early Wednesday, he told police he heard noises near the garage. He went outside and fired 10 shots at a car driven by a man he contended was standing in an alley holding a long rifle. In reality, the man in the car was having a “romantic interlude” with a teenage girl from the neighborhood. No gun was found in their car, police said.
