North Toledo memorial damaged by vandals

7/11/2001

Vandals broke lights and stole two bronze picket signs at the memorial to fallen workers in Union Memorial Park in North Toledo, causing about $10,000 in damage and losses.

In addition, three pole lights on a walkway from Champlain Street were damaged and the glass and mounting brackets on four mounted lights and the glass on a ground light were broken. The damage occurred between 7:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Monday. It was reported to police about 10 a.m. yesterday.

The $225,000 memorial was dedicated May 12. It commemorates the bloody 1934 strike at the former Electric Auto-Lite factory in which two people were killed and 200 were hurt.
