Community groups to hold prayer vigil for slain man

10/28/2001

An interfaith prayer vigil will be held at 6:30 p.m. today in memory of a central-city man who was murdered Oct. 15.

Tyrone Willis, 47, was found dead in his apartment, 1133 North Huron St. after his roommate went to the Safety Building in downtown Toledo, told a desk officer he killed Mr. Willis, and pulled out the butcher knife used in the crime.

The stabbing occurred during an argument, police said.

Mark Wayne Jones, 32, was indicted Wednesday by a Lucas County grand jury on one count of murder.

He is being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

The vigil will be held at 1131 North Huron, next to the house in which Mr. Willis died.

A vigil is held for each person who dies in a violent act in the city.

It is sponsored by Metro-Toledo Churches United, the Interracial Religious Coalition, the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence, America's Nightmare Due to the Lack of Respect and Education of Weapons, and the Justice and Peace Group of the Emmaus Cluster.
