“It has been a privilege to have been part of the management of BCI for 60 years during a period of growth and diversification,” said Mr. Block, 86. “I believe that BCI management is in good hands and well prepared for the future.”

A new chairman is expected to be named shortly by the BCI Executive Committee.

Mr. Block, who joined his family's company in 1936, became chairman of BCI in 1987. Prior to that he was co-publisher of the newspapers for 46 years.

“This has been a very difficult decision for me, not just because of participation in the excitement of newspaper publishing, but because of the association with so many great people,” Mr. Block said in a statement to employees.

“I believe that with the help of all of you we have built two fine newspapers and that the next two generations of my family are dedicated to maintaining the quality you have created.”

Mr. Block said he will continue to serve on the boards of BCI and the two newspapers.
