GM plans more overtime, may add extra shifts

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. plans to put 14 North American plants on overtime next week, and later may add shifts at two factories as the world's largest automaker responds to rising demand for its cars and trucks.

The company has been running overtime at factories that build full-size pickup trucks, sport utilities, and some sedans for most of the year.

General Motors now is deciding whether to add shifts at plants in Pontiac, Mich., which makes pickups, and Oshawa, Ont., which builds the Chevrolet Impala car, spokesman Dan Flores said. He wouldn't say how many workers might be added.

"We're looking at ways to boost production without adding bricks and mortar," he said.
