Neighbors plan cleanup, rain or shine

4/26/2002

The city of Toledo's fourth annual Raise the Roof Day program is set for tomorrow from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. - rain or shine - in the 3100 blocks of Maplewood and Glenwood avenues in the Old West End.

The daylong improvement program, which will include litter and trash pickup, weed and tree removal, painting, and many other projects, was created several years ago to address common home maintenance issues in the city's older neighborhoods.

Last year, nearly $90,000 was raised to effect more than $200,000 in improvements to 32 structures comprising 40 units of affordable housing.

The city of Toledo has pledged the help and resources of its neighborhoods department, but organizers are hoping to have more than 300 volunteers for tomorrow's cleanup, which is focusing on the Neighborhoods In Partnership service area near Detroit and Central avenues.

Anyone interested in participating should call the group's office at 419-241-9682 to volunteer, make a donation, or for more information.
