Toledo police issued 2,850 traffic citations during this year's special target enforcement program, an increase from the number of tickets handed out last year.

The program began Jan. 1 and ended Monday. Officers worked 1,344 hours, which were covered by an $80,448 grant from the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Most of the violations were related to speeding, seat belt use, and motorists driving without a license, said Lt. Louis Borucki, head of the police department's traffic section.

During last year's program, officers issued 2,580 citations.

While the number of accidents between Jan. 1 and Aug. 30 increased 1 percent from the same period last year, the number of injury crashes decreased 10 percent. Property damage accidents increased about 5 percent.

There were 10,189 accidents from Jan. 1 to Aug. 30, compared to 10,085 reported for the same time last year. During that time period, there were 2,207 injury crashes this year compared to 2,454 last year.
