Grand jury indicts driver in fatal crash

Deeb Mashni, 29, of 40 Tiffany Square Drive, was indicted yesterday by a Lucas County grand jury in the Nov. 3 crash that killed a college football official after the University of Toledo-Miami University game.

Mr. Mashni was indicted on one count each of aggravated vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

Police said Mr. Mashni was driving 55 to 65 mph on Douglas Road when he struck the car of Michael Perry, 45, of Amherst, N.Y. The speed limit is 35 mph.

Mr. Perry, who was the field judge for the UT-Miami game, was killed. His passenger, George Santoro, of Hamburg, N.Y., was hurt. He was the umpire for the contest.

Mr. Perry's vehicle was westbound on Monroe Street about 1:30 a.m. when Mr. Mashni's northbound minivan ran the red light and hit it.

Witnesses told police Mr. Mashni had been driving about 100 mph on Douglas between Dorr Street and Nebraska Avenue and ran a red light at Central Avenue before the accident.
