Man sentenced in tussle with officers

3/14/2003

A 38-year-old Sylvania Township man received a 90-day suspended jail sentence, three years probation, and was ordered to undergo counseling yesterday for convictions stemming from a struggle he had last year at his residence with township police officers over a loaded handgun.

Dennis F. Isenberg, of 4760 Sutton Pl., pleaded guilty in December in Sylvania Municipal Court to aggravated menacing and disorderly conduct charges. An obstruction of official business charge was dismissed at that time.

Judge M. Scott Ramey sentenced Mr. Isenberg to 60 days for aggravated menacing and 30 days for disorderly conduct. He also was fined $400 and was ordered to pay $110 in court costs.

The judge ordered him not to have any other criminal offenses during his probation period.

Officers went to Mr. Isenberg's house Oct. 13 to check on his safety at the request of his ex-wife. When the officers, accompanied by his mother, Sandy Isenberg, former president of the Lucas County commissioners, entered the house, they found him on a couch. Mr. Isenberg became agitated, yelled, and demanded that everyone leave, police said.

When Mr. Isenberg reached under a pillow on the couch, two officers jumped on him and discovered he was holding onto a loaded 9-mm handgun.

Police sprayed him with a chemical agent, disarmed him, and took him to Rescue Mental Health Services.
