Sylvania businessman Jack Sparagowski's failed bid to create an upscale Southwest-style golf course and housing development in Sylvania Township reached another bitter phase this week as Desert Village LP filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Desert Village, which owns 235 acres from Sylvania Avenue to Brint Road between Centennial and Mitchaw roads, has $4.2 million in assets and $5.3 million in liabilities, according to the filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Toledo.

One of the largest unsecured claims is more than $1.2 million owed to MacCurrach Golf Construction Inc. of Jacksonville, Fla. MacCurrach, which worked on the golf course for three months in 2000, has a foreclosure case pending against Desert Village in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.
