Police kill pit bull

6/9/2003

Toledo police officers shot and killed a pit bull as it charged them Saturday.

After responding to a call of a vicious dog in the 3300 block of Parkwood Avenue, Officers Samuel Geiser and Diana Trevino found the dog on a porch after it had attacked the caller's dog, a Labrador retriever.

The pit bull was on Tammy Perkins' front porch when the officers called the Lucas County Dog Warden's office and cleared people from the area. The pit bull then attacked the retriever again.

The officers said they shouted at the pit bull to stop when it then charged them. Officer Trevino fired three shots with her service weapon, and Officer Geiser fired once with a shotgun, killing the dog.

The retriever ran away but was found in the neighborhood bleeding. Police said Ms. Perkins took her dog to an emergency veterinary clinic.

Police said they could not determine the owner of the pit bull.
