FREMONT — A Clyde police officer was convicted yesterday of breaking into two local businesses while on duty last year.

Gary Enderle pleaded guilty to two counts of breaking and entering, both fifth-degree felonies, during a hearing before Judge James Sherck of Sandusky County Common Pleas Court. Sentencing was set for Nov. 4. The charges carry a maximum penalty of one year in prison.

As part of a plea agreement, single counts of breaking and entering, theft, and tampering with evidence were dropped. Authorities had alleged that Enderle broke into three Clyde businesses while working the midnight shift in October, intending to rob them. Nothing was taken from the businesses.

The officer had been suspended with pay from the department since October.
