Driver who fled after accident gets 90 days

Judge James Bates said in Lucas County Common Pleas Court yesterday he was disturbed at the actions of Kevin Davis Oct. 6 after he struck a young girl who ran into the street in front of his vehicle.

Davis, who was sentenced yesterday by Judge Bates, picked Amerson Haley from the pavement in the 400 block of Starr Avenue and carried her to a nearby grassy area. Davis, who was driving without a valid operator's license, then drove away.

“I can't understand how anyone could do that to a 6-year-old girl,” Judge Bates said.

Davis, 38, of 3337 Glenwood Ave. was sentenced to 90 days at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio, Stryker, and was placed on community control for three years. He had pleaded no contest Nov. 20 to failing to stop after an accident involving injury to a person.

Judge Bates noted the irony in the situation that caused Davis to flee: Had it not been for the suspended license, Davis would not have been charged because he would have remained at the scene.

Young Amerson of 443 Potter St., who was hurt seriously, was taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Davis later called police from a convenience store and told them he had struck the child. He had bench warrants for three unrelated traffic citations.
