Former Toledo worker indicted on theft charge

A Toledo city employee who resigned this week was indicted yesterday after she was accused of taking slightly more than $1,100 in city funds to pay her property taxes.

Julie A. Koch, 41, of 3552 Waldorf Drive, was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury on a charge of theft in office, a fourth-degree felony. She resigned Wednesday after working for the city since December, 2000. She served as a real estate records clerk, and her salary was $29,330, according to city records.

The alleged theft was discovered before any funds were misappropriated, resulting in no loss to the city.

The city immediately began taking steps to ensure that similar incidents do not occur, according to a statement released by the city law department.

“The city s longstanding policy is to make no comment on employment matters. In addition, this matter is under ongoing investigation and prosecution, making comment even more inappropriate,” according to the statement.

City Safety Director Joe Walter said the incident last week with Ms. Koch was a one-time occurrence, which was discovered this week and reported to police.
