Toledo man indicted in Seneca Co. fatality

8/8/2004

FOSTORIA A Toledo man has been indicted by a Seneca County grand jury in connection with a June vehicle crash on U.S. 23 that killed a Fostoria woman.

Martin Rickman, 21, was indicted on one count each of aggravated vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a motor vehicular collision, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and driving under suspension.

Mr. Rickman, who also was charged with a probation violation, is being held in the county jail in lieu of a $125,000 bond.

The charges stem from the death June 13 of Tiffany K. Day, 19, who was one of several passengers in a van driven by Mr. Rickman, authorities said.

Mr. Rickman was southbound on U.S. 23 at a high rate of speed about 4 a.m. when he tried to pass another vehicle in a no passing zone.

The van struck the other vehicle at least twice, and then hit a traffic sign, fire hydrant, and a utility pole before rolling over, according to authorities.

Mr. Rickman and the other passengers fled, leaving Ms. Day alone in the van.

Mr. Rickman surrendered to authorities later that day.

Crack cocaine was found inside the van, but authorities said that they were unable to determine to whom it belonged.
