TIFFIN - A Toledo man will serve five years in prison for causing the death of a Fostoria woman in a vehicle crash last year.

Martin Rickman, 21, was sentenced yesterday to four years for aggravated vehicular homicide, four years for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in death, and 179 days in jail for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving under suspension.

Judge Michael Kelbley of Seneca County Common Pleas Court ordered those terms to be served concurrently but sentenced Rickman to an additional 12 months for violating his community control provisions for a previous drug conviction.

The crash on June 13, 2004, killed Tiffany Day, 19, who was a passenger in a van driven by Rickman without the owner's consent. Rickman tried to pass another vehicle on U.S. 23 in Fostoria and lost control of the van, which struck the other vehicle and a traffic sign, fire hydrant, and utility pole before rolling over. Rickman fled on foot.
