2/17/2005

When the Rossford Superintendent Luci Gernot prohibited Christian rock band Pawn from playing during school hours in December, the school board said it feared a lawsuit would be filed arguing that the performance would promote religion in a public school.

Instead, four of the band s members sued the district today, filing a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against the Rossford Exempted Village School District and Superintendent Luci Gernot.

The band members claim they were discriminated against for religious purposes even though they planned to play a show with a secular theme at a Dec. 21 anti-drug assembly during school hours.

They are asking Judge David A. Katz to rule that they should have been allowed to play the concert.

The band is being represented by The Rutherford Institute, a nonprofit legal and educational organization that specializes in the defense of religious liberty and human rights.
