Professor sues UT over discrimination, right

3/23/2005

An economics professor at the University of Toledo has filed an employment discrimination and civil rights lawsuit against the school in U.S. District Court in Toledo.

Gene Chang, who is Chinese-American, claims that he learned in October, 2003, that he was being paid less than white faculty members with "less meritorious performance in research, teaching, and service." Since that time, the professor alleges the university has continued to violate his rights by failing to pay him in accordance with law.

Mr. Chang is seeking back pay, benefits, and compensatory damages totaling $350,000. He previously filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and that case was closed in January. According to documents, the EEOC was unable to conclude that the information it obtained established violation of law.
