PORT CLINTON - An Ottawa County man has been ordered to spend 90 days in jail for setting off an explosive device last spring that killed a friend.

Mark P. Gulau, 36, of Gypsum, Ohio, was sentenced Wednesday to 180 days in jail, with 90 days suspended, for using a dangerous ordnance while intoxicated.

Judge Frederick Hany of Ottawa County Municipal Court also fined Gulau $500 plus court costs and put him on probation for five years.

Jeffrey D. Bodi, 34, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, was killed May 30 when Gulau ignited gunpowder in a homemade noisemaker. The powder was packed with paper towels into a pipe welded onto a steel plate. When the device exploded, a piece of pipe hit Mr. Bodi in the face.
