The Andersons Inc. said yesterday it has boosted the fleet of rail cars it owns by 8 percent.

The Maumee firm, which leases rail cars and locomotives to other companies, has completed the purchase of 1,180 rail cars from an undisclosed buyer. The purchase price wasn't revealed. That will increase the firm's fleet to 16,000.

Additionally, the publicly traded agribusiness concern said it has invested $1 million in Bio-Energy Co. LLC, Rensselaer, Ind. Officials said the outlay will have no impact on the firm's ongoing study of whether to build a plant in Michigan to produce the gasoline additive ethanol.
