The James C. Caldwell Community Center will begin offering additional social services to nearby North Toledo residents starting next month.

Through an initial $55,000 grant provided by the United Way of Greater Toledo, the organization will develop a family resource center at its facility at 3201 Stickney Ave.

The facility, slated to open Dec. 1, will add two case managers who will assess the needs of area residents, and will be open additional hours.

A food pantry will be added next year.

The center currently provides programs addressing teen pregnancy, recreational activities for youths and seniors, and child care and day care programs.

Bill Kitson, president of the local United Way, said the initial grant will cover a seven-month period. After that, the center will be incorporated into United Way's regular funding stream for year-round support.

Within the last year, the community center has spent $210,000 on its facilities for renovations, and expanded to include a newly renovated residence next door.
