Dad who hurt infant girl gets 3-year term

11/23/2005

A North Toledo man who told authorities he broke the leg of his 8-day-old daughter because he was angry with the infant's mother was sentenced yesterday to three years in prison.

Steven Lapoint, 20, who pleaded no contest Nov. 7 to felony child endangering, was sentenced by Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Frederick McDonald.

Prosecutors said Lapoint grabbed the leg of the infant and twisted it May 22 in the apartment he shared with his girlfriend, Aubrey Hendricks, 3517 East Manhattan Blvd.

Initially, Lapoint and Hendricks told authorities the girl suffered the injury when Lapoint's father grabbed her by the leg as she was falling off a couch. However, Lori Olender, a county assistant prosecutor, said the couple recanted the story and Lapoint admitted to twisting his daughter's leg after he became angry with Hendricks.

Hendricks, 19, pleaded no contest to felony attempted obstructing justice. She will be sentenced Jan. 3 by Judge McDonald.
