Woman gets prison time for assault of deputy

A 37-year-old woman who used a car to assault a Lucas County sheriff's deputy in front of the county jail in June was sentenced to more than four years in prison yesterday.

Jennifer Lynn Abdoney, of 502 Sunset Blvd. was sentenced to one year for aggravated assault and 17 months for failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Ruth Ann Franks also sentenced Abdoney to three years in prison for possession of cocaine in a separate incident.

Abdoney's cocaine possession and aggravated assault sentences will run concurrently while the failure-to-comply sentence will run consecutively to those drug and assault sentences.

Abdoney entered an Alford plea earlier this month to the charges. She had faced up to 15 1/2 years in prison.

Deputy Jay Schmeltz was hurt June 30 when he tried to check Abdoney's identification after she parked in a restricted area on Spielbusch Avenue. Ignoring his order to get out of the car, she put the vehicle in drive, striking him as she drove off.

Deputy Schmeltz fired his gun at the car, striking the back window. Abdoney was arrested a short time later on Lagrange Street.

The drug charge stemmed from a police search of Abdoney's apartment June 15, where officers confiscated marijuana, cocaine, and drug paraphernalia.
