Deputy accused of lying to grand jury arraigned

A Lucas County sheriff s deputy who is accused of assaulting a Toledo man and lying to a county grand jury was arraigned yesterday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Maurice Morris, 41, pleaded not guilty to felony perjury and misdemeanor assault.

He was booked into the county jail, where he is a longtime employee, and later released on a monitored recognizance bond.

Judge Gary Cook scheduled a pretrial hearing for May 19.

Mr. Morris of 3127 Meadowbrook Ct. is accused of punching a 29-year-old man at a church service.

Authorities also said he hounded the man and cited and charged him with unfounded warrants.
