Libbey back in black for quarter

4/28/2006

Libbey Inc. said yesterday that it made $515,000, or 4 cents a share, in the first quarter, compared to a year-earlier loss of $1.7 million, or 12 cents a share.

The Toledo manufacturer of drinking glasses, dishes, and other tableware reported first-quarter sales of $135 million, up 4 percent from $130 million during the same period last year. A 10 percent increase in shipments to food service customers contributed to improved results, officials said.

The firm said it has seen "minimal impact" from a strike by 260 workers at its Syracuse China plant in Syracuse, N.Y.
