Libbey Inc. said yesterday that it lost $9.6 million, or 68 cents a share, in the second quarter, worse than a loss of $900,000, or 6 cents a share, in the prior-year period.

The Toledo manufacturer of drinking glasses and tableware said quarterly sales rose 9 percent to $158 million from $145 million in 2005's second quarter. The firm blamed the higher loss on special charges regarding a Mexican business purchase.
