Fourteen people graduated on Friday from weeklong training for the Toledo Police Department s Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol program.

Volunteers provide one-on-one weekly visits to seniors who live alone, are shut-in, or disabled in order to monitor their well-being. Police said the volunteers make about 3,000 visits a year.

The graduates included Joe Walter, former city safety director and former assistant fire chief, police said.

Earlier this month, the patrol received an award for its partnership with the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio. At that time, it had 50 trained volunteers who made visits to 92 seniors.
