BOWLING GREEN - Bond was continued at $65,000 yesterday for a Wood County man charged with using a golf club last month to assault a member of the Owens Community College golf team.

Wood County Common Pleas Court Judge Alan Mayberry declined to reduce the bond for Shawn R. Bryan, 21, who has given authorities addresses in both Oregon and Rossford.

Mr. Bryan has been held in the Wood County jail since Oct. 19 when he was arrested for assaulting Jay Dalgarn, 19, of Pataskala, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus. At his arraignment yesterday, Mr. Bryan pleaded not guilty to one count of attempted murder and two counts of felonious assault.

A pretrial hearing was set for Jan. 5 and a trial for Jan. 29-31.

After a Wood County grand jury indicted Mr. Bryan earlier this month, Paul Dobson, an assistant county prosecutor, said investigators believe Mr. Bryan was trying to kill Mr. Dalgarn.

According to Rossford police, Mr. Bryan and Brandon Gobbell, 20, of Rossford, were walking past Mr. Dalgarn's house on Maple Street about 7 p.m. Oct. 18 and began taunting two of Mr. Dalgarn's teammates who were wearing pinkish-colored golf shirts.

When Mr. Dalgarn and another teammate arrived home a short time later, Mr. Bryan and Mr. Gobbell reportedly began taunting them as well, using derogatory terms for sexual orientation and race.

Police said Mr. Dalgarn was punched as he got his golf clubs out of his car's trunk and then beaten with a 3-iron that he tried to use to ward off his assailants.

According to Perrysburg Municipal Court records, charges of assault and drug abuse were dismissed against Mr. Gobbell, but on Monday Rossford police filed a felony charge of complicity against him.

An arrest warrant was issued, but had not been served as of yesterday.
