Workers efforts keep Bryan plant open

BRYAN After United Steelworkers members agreed to start paying some of their health-insurance costs, Plastech Engineered Products Co. reversed its decision to close its 313-employee factory in Bryan.

Plastech notified the state last month it would close the plant by year s end. Workers voted to pay for some health-care coverage last week, and the notice was removed Monday, said Vicki Vergeldt, company spokesman.

That puts the plant in a more competitive position, she said of the union agreement.
