A 42-year-old Toledo man will be arraigned today after a chase yesterday that ended when the vehicle he was driving hit a pole in the 1600 block of West Bancroft Street, police said.

Richard Bell was held in the Lucas County jail yesterday until his appearance this morning in Toledo Municipal Court.

Toledo police said a car traveling west on West Bancroft near Parkside Boulevard about 4:45 a.m. did not have its license plate illuminated. When a police unit activated its emergency lights and siren to get the driver to pull over, the motorist fled. Officers chased the vehicle over 11 streets before the car returned to West Bancroft, where he hit a Toledo Edison pole.

The driver, later identified as Mr. Bell, tried to run but was apprehended by officers, police said. Police said Mr. Bell was charged with license plate illumination, failure to comply, resisting arrest, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
