Rossford man faces charges in beating of Owens golfer

2/9/2007

BOWLING GREEN - A Rossford man believed to be an accomplice in the attack on an Owens Community College golfer was named in a bill of information filed yesterday in Wood County Common Pleas Court.

Brandon D. Gobbell, 20, of 207 Osborn St. was charged with complicity to felonious assault, a second-degree felony, stemming from the Oct. 18 attack on Jay Dalgarn, 19, of Pataskala, Ohio, outside the Maple Street apartment he shared with teammates.

Last month, Shawn R. Bryan, 21, pleaded guilty to attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, and vandalism for the assault on Mr. Dalgarn, which police said began when Bryan and Mr. Gobbell began taunting two of Mr. Dalgarn's teammates who were wearing pinkish-colored golf shirts.

When Mr. Dalgarn and another teammate arrived a short time later, the two men began verbally abusing them as well, and Bryan struck Mr. Dalgarn at least three times with the victim's own golf club, authorities said.

Bryan is to be sentenced March 16 by Wood County Common Pleas Judge Alan Mayberry.

Mr. Gobbell's case also was assigned to Judge Mayberry.

Among those indicted by a Wood County grand jury this week were:

•Christopher Arrington, 18, of Perrysburg, who was charged with making a terrorist threat for posting threats against Rossford High School on the Internet that included references to Columbine High School, site of a 1999 attack by two armed students.

The third-degree felony specifies that Mr. Arrington made the threat "with purpose to intimidate or coerce a civilian population."

"There were several levels of his communication - doing it over the Internet as well as indications to people face-to-face," said Paul Dobson, an assistant Wood County prosecutor.

"They were specific threats. The word 'Columbine' had come out as a framework for his intentions."

Rossford police arrested Mr. Arrington Jan. 30.

A week earlier, police arrested a 16-year-old Rossford High School student believed to have been involved with Mr. Arrington in posting the threats on the MySpace Web site. The juvenile is being held in the Wood County Juvenile Detention Center on an unrelated charge.

•Daniel Garbig, 21, of Perrysburg was indicted on nine felonies related to the robbery of a Bowling Green carryout and a home-invasion robbery at a Bowling Green apartment.

Mr. Garbig is to be arraigned Feb. 26 by Common Pleas Judge Reeve Kelsey for robbery, intimidation of a victim in a criminal case, burglary, aggravated robbery, extortion, three counts of kidnapping, and felonious assault.

He is charged with robbing the Campus Quarters carryout on East Wooster Street Dec. 19 and breaking into a Campbell Hill Road apartment Jan. 8 where three assailants robbed the residents at gunpoint. The victims were tied up and one was struck in the head with a handgun.

•Christopher Frick, 39, of Perrysburg, for failure to remit sales tax and theft, both fourth-degree felonies, for allegedly failing to turn over sales tax collected at Mr. Beefy's restaurant in Perrysburg to the state.

The theft, which was described as more than $5,000 but less than $10,000 in the indictment, reportedly occurred between April 27, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2006.

Mr. Frick is to be arraigned Feb. 20 by Judge Robert Pollex.
