Closed nonprofit sued by ex-landlord for rent
3/18/2007The former landlord of the now shuttered United Health Services Inc. has filed a lawsuit in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to recoup some lost rent money.
United Health Services, which had sponsored the Taste of the Town and the Northwest Ohio Rib-Off events since their inception, closed its doors Nov. 30 after 36 years because of "financial constraints."
This year the trademark food festivals were auctioned off to the highest bidder for a combined total of $63,250.
The money received was going to help pay the organization's debt.
Superior St. LLC said in the lawsuit that the nonprofit had signed a 10-year lease on June 25, 2002, to rent about 4,200 square feet on the second floor of 241 North Superior St.
The lease called for rental payments of $36,000 a year, with an annual increase of $1,000 a year.
The total amount of rent owed over the 10 years was $405,000, and United Health Services had made 50 months of payments equaling $149,738.74, the lawsuit said.
The lawsuit was filed Friday by attorney Mark Jacobs.
It further stated that the defendant had received payment for the sale of the food festivals in the amount of $70,000, which was now held in a trust account of attorney Patricia Kovacs.
Ms. Kovacs was out of town and could not be reached for comment.
